World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT)
Founded in 1951, the WFOT emerged from discussions among 28 representatives from various countries. The formal establishment took place in 1952 in Liverpool, England, with ten founding associates from Australia, Canada, Denmark, India, Israel, New Zealand, South Africa, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
The initial objectives of WFOT included promoting occupational therapy internationally, advancing practice standards, maintaining professional ethics, facilitating international exchange of therapists and students, and holding international congresses.
Key Milestones
In 1952, a Preparatory Commission was held in Liverpool, England, with representatives from seven countries and written approval from three others. These ten occupational therapy associations from Australia, Canada, Denmark, India, Israel, New Zealand, South Africa, Sweden, the UK (England and Scotland), and the USA founded the WFOT. Ms. Helen Willard from the USA served as temporary chairperson until officers were elected. The first officers were: President Ms. Margaret B. Fulton (Scotland), First Vice-President Ms. Gillian Crawford (Canada), Second Vice-President Ms. Ingrid Pahlsson (Denmark), Secretary-Treasurer Ms. Clare S. Spackman (USA), and Assistant Secretary-Treasurer Mrs. Glyn Owens (England).
Admitted into official relations with the World Health Organization (WHO)
Recognized as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) by the United Nations (UN)
